Layout and drain location: moving the drain means opening the floor, so decide the footprint first.
Valve type: pressure-balanced holds temperature during a flush; thermostatic holds an exact setting and supports multiple heads.
Water volume: rain heads and body sprays together can outrun a half-inch supply line. We size the supply to the fixtures you actually want.
Accessibility: curbless entry, a bench, grab bar blocking and a hand shower are far easier to plan now than to retrofit later.
Waterproofing: the pan, curb and wall assembly have to be right underneath the tile. This is where shortcut installs fail.
Water heater capacity: a larger shower with more heads changes your hot water demand, and we will tell you if your heater can keep up.
Upgrading Showers in Older Valley Homes

Central Valley water leaves mineral behind, and showers are where you see it first: crusted heads, weak spray, cartridges that stiffen up. Choosing quality trim with serviceable cartridges means the fixture can be repaired in ten years instead of replaced.
We also recommend a hand shower or a head with cleanable nozzles, and where hardness is severe, a properly sized softener. It protects the shower valve, the water heater and every other fixture in the house at the same time.

Trim and valve swaps usually are not. Moving drains, altering walls or a full conversion often are, and we pull the permit and handle the inspection when the scope calls for it.
